The Gambia Experience 2009 

75 Beacon 6th formers will be visiting The Gambia from the 20th November until the 27th November.  This is the nineteenth time Beacon Community College students have visited this undeveloped West African country!

Aim:

This visit allows the participating 6th Form students to witness first hand the problems that a Third World country faces from an economic, educational and environmental viewpoint. We have a strong link with The Gambian High School and their 6th Form students accompany us on the trip. For the last four years our students have raised between £10000 and £20000 and taken it over there to fund projects in villages that we visit, many of which we’ve worked with for 19 years.  Over the years we’ve funded water systems, school buildings, equipment and resources, health centre buildings and equipment, health care programmes, and many other projects.

An Educational Experience:

The students assess how effectively the Gambians have spent the money that was donated last year.  They then research the current needs of each of the villages we visit and decide if and how much money should be donated to each village this year.

We here at Beacon are very proud of the efforts our students make to raise money for The Gambia.  They really do make a difference in The Gambia and every contribution from members of the community and local businesses is greatly appreciated. We would appreciate contributions such as: any time you or your staff could spare, prizes for fund-raising event, donations (cheques made payable to Beacon Community College), or anything else that you could spare that would help our students raise funds for this cause! In return we can list your organisation name on The Gambia web page on our school web site and print your logo on the T Shirts the students wear on the trip for publicity photos.

9^th October – Beacon staff car wash

17^th October – Barn Dance at Jarvis Brook Primary School (pm)

21^st October – Yr 7 Halloween Disco at Beacon (pm)

22^nd October – Non-uniform day for Beacon students

22^nd October – Fashion Show at Beacon (pm)

6^th November – The Gambia Show! Music and dance at Beacon (pm)

20^th November – Brighton Drummers at the Sanctuary Cafe in Brighton (Ms Crane’s event!)

Buzz’s delicious chocolate is on sale at most Beacon events and students should also look out for the weekly cake sale at Beeches and the 6^th Form Centre!

Keep an eye out for the huge number of other activities that happen and please support our students as much as possible!
