Beacon Community College displayed some of their finest musicians at a Recital evening on 15th October 2009. The event was sponsored by the College specialisms. The students demonstrated several new instruments bought over the last couple of months. On display was the new concert grand piano and top of the range drum kit funded by the PTA. A new acoustic guitar and bass were also demonstrated to a packed audience. Mr Wholey Head of Music said “The money raised was £235, and this will pay for the upkeep of the piano over the next year.
I am very grateful for the support from parents and students with this funding” Mr Wholey added “There were some amazing performances from our students tonight and the department is very proud of all its Musicians” Piano performances were given by Charlie Hutchings who has a GCSE in Music already at the age of 13 and is now studying A Level Music; Patrick Hinton from Year 11, gave a wonderful rendering of “Childhood Scenes” by Schumann; and Jake Steven, Year 12 who is studying BTEC Music composition played one of his own works called Jam. The Drum Kit was played by Oliver Stocks from Year 10, and a spectacular performance by Jerome Bowman with his tribute to Buddy Rich. Vocal performances were from Laura-Jayne Burns from Year 10 who sang “Be thou my vision” and Beacon’s Young Musician of the Year 2009 Ruari Kelsey from Year 11 gave a very moving performance of “Bring him home” from Les Miserables. The electric and acoustic guitars were played by Band of the Year 2009 winners Claire Ingledew and Hannah Sutton with there version of Mr Brightside; and fast track GCSE Music students George Ingledew and Tom Kemp gave a wonderful duet performance of “When you were young” Peter Swan the Principal, presented the students with certificates that listed all their Musical achievements at the school. He said ” It was a joy to have the opportunity to listen to the new instruments purchased for the music department, but more importantly, to once more experience the rich and diverse talents of the students. I am sure that everyone in the audience agreed given the ringing round of applause at the end of the evening.
