We provide high quality opportunities for all pupils involved in core PE to Gifted & Talented and beyond. As a department we aim to provide them with the skills and knowledge that pupils will need to participate in physical activity and in turn develop their education about Health and Fitness during and after school. |

Year 7 Course OverviewTeacher in Charge – Miss Virgo Term 1 Students complete a generic programme covering different areas of the PE National Curriculum. Term 2 – 4 Students complete in a number of activities from Football, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Rugby, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Dance, OAA, Swimming, Leadership and Multi Skills. Term 5 – 6 Students complete in a number of summer sports from Striking and Fielding, Tennis and Athletics. These are Sports for Excellence, Sports for All, Aesthetics, Junior Sports Leadership Award, Sports including Outdoor and Adventurous activities. Btec First in Sport – There are two types of Btec courses run in years 10 and 11 that pupils have opted for to gain qualifications. Btec First Certificate is equivalent to two GCSE’s and Btec First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSE’s. Within these courses pupils take part in a variety of sports and complete coursework from different theory units. Btec First Certificate in Sport. Term 1 & 2 - Unit 1: Health Safety and Injury Term 3 & 4 - Unit 2: The Body in Action Term 5 & 6 - Unit 3: The Sports Industry Btec First Diploma in Sport Term 1 & 2 – Unit 1: Health Safety and Injury Term 3& 4 – Unit 2: The Body in Action Term 5 & 6 – Unit 3: The Sports Industry GCSE PE – Pupils that have opted to take part in GCSE PE complete both practical and theory elements of the course over a two year period. Pupils get assessed in a variety of sports throughout the year and also complete an analysis of performance in one sport making up 60% of their final grade. In addition to this, pupils learn about a variety of sports related topics within their theory lessons culminating in an exam at the end of the course worth 40%. Year 10 GCSE PE Theory content: Term 1 – Unit 1.1.1: Healthy active lifestyles and how they can benefit you Term 2 – Unit 1.1.2: Influences on your active and healthy lifestyle Term 3 – Unit 1.1.3: Exercise and fitness as part of your healthy, active lifestyle Term 4 – Unit 1.1.4: Physical activity as part of your healthy active lifestyle Term 5 – Unit 1.1.5: Your personal health and well being Term 6 – Additional practical lesson - Rounders Year 11 Course OverviewTeacher in Charge – Mr Cottrell Core PE Overview – Pupils choose from different types of physical education that they have a particular interest in. Year 12 Course OverviewTeacher in charge – Mr. Lister AS PE – The focus of this course is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. The theory element of the course contributes to 60% of the overall grade and is divided into 3 topics covered throughout the year: Anatomy and Physiology Acquiring Movement Skills Socio-Cultural Studies The remaining 40% is achieved through the students’ individual performance in 2 sports and their ability to evaluate and plan for the improvement of others. BTEC National Certificate in Sport – The course provides an introduction to the sports sector for students wishing to build a career in sport and is equivalent to 2 A-Levels. Students complete 12 units over 2 years. In addition students will have practical sessions and cover a variety of sports over the 2 years. Term 1 & 2: Health, Safety and Injury and The Body in Action Term 3 & 4: Training and Fitness and Sports Development Term 5 & 6: Sports Coaching and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities BTEC First in Sport – The BTEC First Certificate is equivalent to two GCSE’s and it is possible to progress towards the BTEC First Diploma which is equivalent to four GCSE’s. Within these courses pupils take part in a variety of sports and complete coursework from different theory units. Term 1: Health Safety and Injury Term 2: The Body in Action Term 3: The Sports Industry Sports Academies – There are currently 4 Academies that specialise in Football, Rugby, Hockey and Golf. These represent a unique opportunity to develop your skills as a player, coach or official whilst gaining academic and professional qualifications. We hope to run a Netball Academy alongside these if sufficient numbers are interested. Community Sports Leaders Award - The prime aim of the CSLA is to produce responsible, motivated and confident students who can lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sporting and recreational activities. As such it concentrates on improving leadership skills, planning and preparation sport sessions and evaluates the activity. Students will experience leading their peers and local primary school children through these sessions. Year 13 Course OverviewTeacher in charge – Mr. Lister A2 PE – This course is a progression from the AS year and once again the focus is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. The theory element of the A2 year contributes to 35% of the overall grade and is divided into 3 topics covered throughout the year: Exercise and Sports Physiology Sports Psychology Historical Studies The remaining 15% is achieved through the students’ individual performance in 1 sport and their ability to evaluate and plan for the improvement of others. BTEC National Certificate in Sport – The course provides an introduction to the sports sector for students wishing to build a career in sport and is equivalent to 2 A-Levels. Students complete 12 units over 2 years. In addition students will have practical sessions and cover a variety of sports over the 2 years. Higher Sports Leaders Award - HSLA is the pinnacle award of a family of coaching qualifications organised & validated by The British Sports Trust and it attracts 30 UCAS points. It is for students who have already obtained the Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) & wish to gain a higher qualification and to improve their coaching and leadership skills.
